Being a Gentleman?!?

photo-151Something funny happened today when I was leaving Chipotle – as I was walking out the the door, a lady who seemed to be in her late twenties, was about to walk into the restaurant. So I stopped and held open the door for her – she stopped dead in her tracks and looked at me with a confused gaze over her eyes. She reached to hold the door open for me, but I said,

“that’s okay you go ahead, I’ll hold the door open.”

Her response was the funny thing, she turned to me and said,

“Are you sure – cause I got it?!?”

I said,

“Of course, there’s still gentlemen in the world!”

And she said,

“I don’t know about that and if there are then your the last!”

Does this strike anybody else as being funny (Funny not in the humorous way, but as in the obsurd way)? I mean I would hope there are more guys out there that hold doors open for women – I do it for my wife about 90% of the time. I would hope that I am raising my son to be a gentleman, by being an example to him by helping his mom, sisters, and other women with the big things and little things. Or am I way off base in thinking that this type of behavior is still the way to be?

Is the gentleman-way outdated? Maybe it’s not modeled enough in todays culture that people don’t really ever experience it to notice it? That woman’s facial expressions and voice inflexions seemed more offended than surprised… Maybe she was just having a bad day…
